Chapter 16

My alarm has a terrible habit of urging me out of this comfy bed, so unreasonable!

As I stretch, my thoughts go to Jack and his black eye, I wonder what state he’s in as we have to go to cash and carry this morning, being as there’s hardly any stock, so I’d better make a move. Tea, toast and a quick shower, perhaps I should give him a knock to make sure he’s awake.

‘You up Jack?’

‘Clipper, I can’t go out like this, look at that state of me! Jack moans as he opens the door.’

‘Blimey mate that is one hell of a shiner! What d’you want to do get some stock from the offie?’

‘No girlfriend, will you take the car get all the gear and I’ll unload when you get back, it’s too pricey round there, and he robs me?’

‘Ok no probs, but I’ll get going now as it’s busy down there on a Saturday, there only open half day, you made a list?’

‘No you know what we need, better than me.’ Jack hands me the car keys.

‘OK I’ll have a quick check before I leave, text you on my way back.’

The local cash and carry isn’t far, but like I said it’s Saturday morning and it fills up with all the small shopkeepers, so I’m expecting a queue, I do most of the shop by memory, throwing on some nibbles as well, at the last, moment I remember the coke and lemonade. Anything else I’ll have to nip round the corner, when I reach the checkout, as expected there’s about six people in front of me, with well laden trolleys, so I decide to give Penny Lee a ring, she didn’t pick up, maybe she’ll ring me back. I’m glad I don’t have to do this every weekend, when the cars loaded I send Jack a text so he’s in the bar waiting to unload, no reply but that’s normal, as I arrive back at the pub and press the squawk, no answer, so I let myself in and start unloading, for quickness I shove all the bottles just inside the door, still no sign of Jack, no point in leaving stuff in the car or it’ll be nicked round here, so I get it all inside, lock the door and park the car. Where is Jack, it’s not like him to let me down, so once back inside I nip upstairs to see where he is, as I go in the kitchen shock horror there’s Jack sprawled out on the floor face down. Do I try and turn him or should I call an ambulance, now I’m no nurse, but they do warn you not to move people, has he fallen, did someone get at him or what? So quick decision I call an ambulance, by the time they arrive Jack is muttering, but I tell him to lie still until the paramedics arrive. I can hear the box screaming in the bar so I run down
